How to mount a boat trailer hand winch

Bolting a hand winch to the trailer's winch stand and using the ratchet.

Harborwright sells the part only — we don't install it. These are general steps; your boat and the maker's manual come first. If you're not sure, have a marine shop fit it.

Safety: Never stand in line with a loaded strap, keep hands clear of the gears, and stay within the rated load.

Steps

  1. Bolt the winch base to the trailer's winch stand with at least three 3/8 in bolts and lock nuts in a triangle pattern (VEVOR manual).
  2. Fit the crank handle to the shaft and tighten its nut.
  3. Run the strap over the bow roller to the boat's bow eye and hook on.
  4. Set the ratchet lever to pull to winch in, or to release to let the strap out. Hold the handle firmly whenever you move the lever.
  5. Don't tow on the winch strap alone — add a bow safety chain or strap.
  6. Rinse with fresh water after salt water.

Follow the maker's manual for your exact model first — it's linked with each part below.
