How to rig and set a fluke anchor

Shackling the chain and rope to a fluke anchor and setting it on the bottom.

Harborwright sells the part only — we don't install it. These are general steps; your boat and the maker's manual come first. If you're not sure, have a marine shop fit it.

Safety: Never anchor from the stern, and secure the rope to a bow cleat — not a rail.

Steps

  1. Shackle the chain to the anchor and the rope to the chain. Tighten each shackle pin and secure it with wire or a cable tie (mousing).
  2. Tie the free end of the rope to the boat before you drop the anchor.
  3. Head into the wind or current, stop, and lower the anchor to the bottom — don't throw it.
  4. Let the boat drift back while paying out line, about 5–7 times the water depth, then cleat it off at the bow.
  5. Give a short burst of reverse to dig it in, and check against a landmark that you aren't dragging.
  6. To pull it, motor slowly up over the anchor and lift straight up. Rinse after salt water.

Follow the maker's manual for your exact model first — it's linked with each part below.
